Up until 2003 you could get the Fabia with a 1.4 that was OHV and therefore used pushrods.

Just a curiosity on a smaller engined modern car. I’m not aware of any other smaller engines using them at the time.

Ford used the old “HCS” or whatever they ended up calling it way up near the 2000's aswell. Good ol’ pushrod tapping noises <3

Outside the US, pushrods were phased out a long time ago.

pushrods don’t cause “tapping” noises unless they have non-hydraulic lifters and nobody’s checked the valve lash in a while.

Na I know they have their uses (the LS is super compact because it stuck with OHV for example) it’s just not something you often see on a little 4 cylinder.

For all you americans out there, let me explain:

European car makers have quickly realized that the advantages of an OHV valvetrain are very much negligible on engines of average european size and therefore have mostly abandoned that technology by the early 1990s. The last european cars to use OHV engines were usually cheap and shitty base model compacts, BRITISH, or a Ford.

The Americans realised this too some time ago, as far as I know there are only v8s using OHV over there for the space saving advantages. The smaller engines all seem to be OHC.

That engine was pretty damn horrible and if I recall correctly its history could be traced back to the 60's. Timing chains on those things were a joke and would often start rattling horribly after 30k km.

I think they go back to the late 50s yeah. My uncle has one, perfectly maintained at 60k miles, chain rattles. So slow it makes my Twingo seems like a hot hatch by comparison. 0-60 whenever it feels like it.
